FUNCTIONAL HYPOTHALAMIC AMENORRHEA IN ENDOCRINOLOGY PRACTICE

Published: 2026-04-18

Abstract

Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is one of the leading causes of secondary amenorrhea in women of reproductive age. Its high prevalence among professional female athletes, underweight patients, and those experiencing chronic psychoemotional stress highlights the need to develop clear diagnostic and treatment algorithms. The condition is a reversible neuroendocrine disorder characterized by suppression of pulsatile gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion due to chronic energy deficiency, excessive physical exertion, and/or psychoemotional stress.
